Arbitrations

Mr. Savage has sat as an arbitrator on significant real property valuation arbitrations, including that arising from the expropriation of timber licences on South Moresby Island, the lease renewal of a major hotel in Greater Vancouver, and various lease arbitrations for major commercial properties.  Mr. Savage has also sat as an Adjudicator under the Canada Labour Code dealing with a variety of workplace issues including the contracting out of postal services, and employee dismissals in the cablevision, trucking, and airline industries.

Tribunal Memberships 

Mr. Savage is a current member of the Employment Standards Tribunal (2004), the Financial Services Tribunal (2006), the Environmental Appeal Board & Forest Appeals Commission (2007).  These tribunals hear appeals under their founding statutes on a variety of administrative law matters, and publish their decisions on their respective websites.

Publications

John has published articles in the Appraisal Institute of Canada, Appraisal Journal, the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia Journal, and the Journal of Assessment and Property Taxation, as well as for golfing magazines and the Alpine Club of Canada Gazette. He is a frequent contributor to the Continuining Legal Education Society of BC Real Property Assessment Course, and has presented papers to national audiences of the Canadian Property Taxpayers Association and to international audiences of the Internation Property Taxation Institute. 

Courtroom:

Mr. Savage is an experienced litigator and has appeared on numerous occasions before a variety of Administrative Tribunals and the Provincial and Federal Courts in British Columbia.  Some court cases in which he was counsel are referenced below.

Professional Associations and Activities:

John is a member of the Victoria Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association and a member of the Law Society of British Columbia. He is an Editorial Board member of the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia on Assessment matters. He is a past member of the various Canadian Bar Association sections, including that on Administrative Law.

Other Activities:

John has a history of volunteer involvement in the community. He is immediate past Honourary Solicitor for Scouts Canada in British Columbia, and recently was awarded the “Silver Acorn” in 2007.  In 2003 he received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for community service.

In the past Mr. Savage has acted as Honourary Solicitor for Lester Pearson College of the Pacific and the Canadian Red Cross Society. He is a member of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce and a past Director and Executive Board Member of the Chamber.

John is currently a Director of the Island Open Golf Society and negotiated a contract with the Canadian Professional Golf Tour resulting in television coverage of the 2003 Victoria Open at the Royal Colwood Golf Course in Victoria in July, 2003.  He continues as an honorary solicitor for the Island Open Golf Society.

He enjoys reading, skiing, hiking, and golfing and on fine days may be seen biking to work in the early hours on the galloping goose trail.
